Above: 1917 photo: The baby is Ruth N. Horst (mother of Clarke Hess). Ruth sits on the laps of her grandparents John M. Stoner (nicknamed Pappy) and Barbara B. (Snyder) Stoner. Ruth's uncle, Clayton S. Stoner, wears a necktie, because he had not joined the Mennonite church.

Pappy (Grandfather) had not joined a Mennonite church, so he does not wear a plain coat in the photo. Milton S. Stoner (far right) has a beard, as he is a member of the Church of the Brethren, and is not Mennonite. He was a preacher and ordained elder for Kempers and Blue Ball congregations.
